How climate change impacts health

Climate change is already harming the health of Wisconsinites.
It brings hotter summers, shorter winters, and more storms, which can lead to serious health issues.
  • We're seeing more cases of heat-related illnesses and injuries from extreme weather, and diseases spread by ticks and mosquitoes.
  • Climate change can worsen respiratory problems due to poor air quality, increase the risk of heart disease, and lead to mental health issues like anxiety and depression.
  • There's a rise in food and waterborne illnesses, as well as the spread of harmful algae blooms that can make us and our pets sick.

Some of our loved ones and neighbors will experience greater harm.
Not everyone is equally affected by these health risks.
  • Some groups, like children, older adults, and communities of color, face greater dangers from climate hazards.
  • People with chronic illnesses or those living in lower income households are also at higher risk.
  • It’s important to recognize these differences and work to protect those who are most affected.

The good news is there's a lot we can do as individuals and a community to reduce climate pollution and help us live healthier and happier lives.
  • Taking action against climate change can help improve our health right now and in the future.
  • By reducing climate pollution, we can make our air, land, and water cleaner, which benefits everyone including our economy—agriculture, industry, tourism and outdoor recreation, transportation, and other businesses.
  • Solutions like making your home more energy-efficient, using cleaner energy, walking or biking more, planting trees or eating more veggies and fruits can improve our health and reduce climate pollution.
  • If we act together, attend community meetings, and talk to decision-makers about solutions and plans, we can protect our communities and ensure a healthier future for all Wisconsinites.
